In looking for a “Daily Delicious” recipe to feature here on the blog for Thursday, out of nowhere I started craving Sloppy Joes!
I can’t remember the last time I had a Sloppy Joe — and like hamburgers, pizza and sandwiches, when you’re Paleo, you can’t exactly pile a burger bun with sweet, delicious Sloppy Joe filling!
But, as with many traditional foods, there are creative ways you can make the Sloppy Joe Paleo!
First, let’s start with a delicious looking Sloppy Joe recipe.
The recipe was initially created by the bloggers grandmother, and she says the recipe has evolved over the years.
The recipe calls for ground beef (grass-fed if possible!), tomato sauce, sage, mustard, onion, ketchup (Paleo, homemade if possible), chili powder, salt and arrowroot powder.
This blogger suggests serving the Sloppy Joes in lettuce boats — saying on her blog: “Eating these as a lettuce wrap gives a whole new meaning to the word ‘sloppy!”
This “Daily Delicious” is sort of a two-fer, as I’m sharing a second recipe for Sloppy Joes, that I discovered via PreppyPaleo.com.
This recipe calls for onion, red/green pepper, tomato paste, water, carrots, ground beef (grass-fed if possible!), tomato sauce, ACV, mustard and seasonings.
Both of these recipes are cooked on the stove, but I think the slow cooker could definitely be employed here! You are basically making a thicker version of chili — essentially.
So now you’ve got the “Sloppy” part of your Sloppy Joes all ready to go — so how do you serve these things when following a Paleo diet?!
I’ve got some ideas for you!
PreppyPaleo.com suggests serving your Sloppy Joes on top of baked sweet potatoes! Genius!
Other ideas include:
Lettuce wraps (as illustrated by PerrysPlate.com)
Over eggs (for a protein-packed meal!)
Packed inside bell peppers (creating a sort of Sloppy Joe Stuffed Peppers!)
Stuffed in between two portabello mushroom caps
On top of onion noodles (essentially, sauteed onions)
Stuffed in between two zucchini cakes
