When you’re Paleo, you have to learn to eat food differently.
For example, you can’t exactly roll up to your favorite fast food restaurant and grab a greasy burger when you’re hungry.
You also can’t grill up a burger at home, or enjoy one at a cookout, unless you’re willing to go bun-free (which is certainly a viable option!)
However, I recently discovered a recipe that is just genius, and will change the way followers of the Paleo lifestyle enjoy a burger (or – gasp – a cheeseburger!)
I’m talking about THIS RECIPE for Deconstructed Hamburgers, also known as Hamburger Salad!
The idea is simple, cook your ground beef (preferably grass-fed), and then assemble your favorite hamburger toppings!
A great idea would be to serve this up like you would a taco bar, where each person gets some taco shells and some meat, and each person can add the toppings he or she desires.
This time, instead of a taco shell, your base is salad greens. Your meat is your hamburger meat (obviously), and accenting your salad is your hamburger toppings, which could include things like:
- sauteed onion
- sauteed mushrooms
- BACON (gasp!)
- homemade guacamole
- roasted red pepper
And the list goes on, and on.
**NOTE: As summer quickly departs for those of us here in Wisconsin — if you’re looking to get a few more uses out of that grill this summer, I would suggest grilling up your burgers as you usually do, and then slicing or crumbling the burger meat onto the greens.
For your salad dressing, you can use (wait for it…) hamburger condiments! Things like ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise.
**For the ketchup and mayonnaise, it would be best to make your own in order to avoid added sugars and preservatives found in store-bought condiments.
